The Inauguration of Sion Airport.
In 1935, Sion Council placed the Valais Aéro-Club in charge of operating the airport. The first Valais aviation school was also opened in Sion.
The legendary Hermann Geiger
Hired in 1946 as the airport’s first director, one man would go on to shape the destiny of Swiss aviation in Sion and the Valais. This man was Hermann Geiger, ‘The Glacier Pilot’ and a pioneer of mountain rescue.
The first air show
The first air show took place in Sion in 1982. Further editions of the event were held in 1986, 1989, 1997, 2001, 2011 and 2017 and were attended by up to 100,000 people.
The first instrument landing system
A new milestone was reached in 1991 with the inauguration of a new terminal as well as an IGS (instrument guidance system), opening the way for charter flights to land at Sion Airport.
A new instrument landing system
On 15 February 2016, Sion Airport introduced a new instrument landing system based on a GPS system called RNAV (RNP 0.3) on runway 25. This complemented the existing IGS 25 and enabled an increase in the degree of precision.
Nestled idyllically in the heart of the Alps, Sion International Airport lies close to some of the finest world-class ski resorts including Crans-Montana, Zermatt, Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Verbier, Saas-Fee, Montreux, Gstaad.
Sion Airport is also an excellent option for escaping the traffic at other busy airports and offers the additional benefit of passenger transfers by helicopter to major events such as the WEF in Davos and the Montreux Jazz Festival.
Equipped with a complete infrastructure, Sion Airport is able to offer regular air links, as well as business and leisure flights.
We also host a wide range of activities involving planes and helicopters such as leisure flights, flying schools, gliding, parachuting, heli-skiing, transportation of equipment and aerial fertilisation by helicopter.
We look forward to welcoming you soon. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for more information.
